Professional sport is great, but it should not take away the best years of peoples lives. I am of course talking about teenage years. Competitions that do not take anything from teenagers are the sport competitions between schools.

Not only do they not put the long-term stress of competition on the shoulders of teenagers, but are also a great way to make new friends from others schools in your area. Such competition was held not long ago in Jesenice, where students of Gimnazija Jesenice and Jesenice High school had their chance to see who is better in basketball, football, volleyball, bowling and table tennis.

The competition was held in the sport park Jesenice in Podmežakla. Basketball was played on the asphalt, as was bowling, football and volleyball were played on grass with the difference being that volleyball was on artificial grass and football was on the real one, table tennis was obviously played on the table tennis table.

All matches had a referee present and sport teachers from both schools. Everything was done professionally. Students were reminded to play fair and to go on and off the field without resentments.

The difference between a professional sport and these games was the purpose, having fun. None of the players needed to win. In professional sport you play for your future, here they were played for the glory of the school. The school reputation is important to students and was one of the reasons they played like they did, hard and fair. Unlike in the professional sport, where you may never get second chance, both sides will be given a chance to do their best next year.

The final overall result was four to one for the Jesenice High school and as student of Gimnazija Jesenice and a member of the basketball team, you can bet that we will do our best next year again in the attempt to finally reclaim the title after six years.
